The things we use every day can make the work behind them almost invisible.

A finished sheet, towel or duvet cover arrives in our home soft, clean and neatly folded. What we do not always see are the many people whose knowledge and labour made it possible: the farmers who grew the cotton, the workers who spun the fibre into yarn, the weavers who created the fabric and the skilled hands that dyed, cut, sewed, finished and inspected every piece.

Labour Day gives us an opportunity to recognize the contributions of workers. It is also a meaningful reminder to look more closely at the people behind the products we bring into our homes—not only once a year, but whenever we choose what to buy and which businesses to support.

Every Cotton Product Begins With a Farmer

Before cotton becomes fabric, it begins as a crop. Farmers prepare the soil, plant and tend the cotton, manage pests and changing weather, and harvest the fibre when it is ready.

Cotton farming requires knowledge, patience and considerable work. Yet many small-scale farmers operate in a global market where they may face fluctuating prices, rising production costs and limited negotiating power. A poor season or sudden fall in market prices can affect not only a farm, but also the family and wider community that depend on it.

Choosing organic cotton is an important environmental decision, but organic certification alone does not address every economic challenge a farmer may face. This is where Fairtrade adds another important layer.

What Fairtrade Cotton Certification Means

Fairtrade is designed to help create a better deal for farmers and workers within global trade.

When certified cotton is sold on Fairtrade terms, producer organizations can benefit from the Fairtrade Minimum Price. This acts as a safety net when market prices fall and aims to support the average costs of sustainable production.

Producer organizations also receive the Fairtrade Premium, an additional sum paid on top of the selling price. Farmers decide collectively how to use these funds according to the priorities of their organization and community. Premium funds may be invested in farming improvements, business development, education, health initiatives or other locally chosen projects.

Fairtrade Standards also establish requirements for producer organizations and traders and support fairer purchasing practices, improved working conditions and opportunities for training and capacity building.

Fairtrade does not make every challenge in global agriculture disappear. What it provides is a more accountable framework—one that recognizes farmers as skilled producers, entrepreneurs and decision-makers who should have a stronger voice in the trade relationships that affect their livelihoods.

From Raw Cotton to Finished Fabric

Once cotton leaves the farm, many more stages of production begin.

The raw fibre must be cleaned and spun into yarn. That yarn is woven into fabric before it is washed, dyed and finished. The fabric is then cut and sewn into bedding, towels and other textile products. At every stage, workers operate machinery, apply specialized techniques, monitor quality and ensure that the finished product meets its specifications.

These processes can also use significant amounts of water, energy, dyes and other chemical inputs. Responsible textile production must therefore consider both the environmental effects of manufacturing and the conditions experienced by the people doing the work.

This is the role of GOTS.

What GOTS Certification Means

The Global Organic Textile Standard is a third-party textile processing standard for products made with certified organic fibres. It follows the material beyond the farm and establishes requirements across processing and manufacturing.

On the environmental side, GOTS includes criteria for chemical inputs, wastewater treatment, environmental management and the separation and identification of organic materials throughout production. The standard restricts substances that do not meet its requirements and helps preserve the integrity of organic fibre as it moves through the supply chain.

GOTS also includes social criteria for certified processing and manufacturing facilities. These requirements address areas such as forced and child labour, discrimination, freedom of association, workplace health and safety, working hours and compensation.

Certification involves independent inspection. This provides a level of verification that broad phrases such as “natural,” “eco-friendly” or “responsibly made” do not offer on their own.

No certification can promise that every supply-chain challenge has been solved. GOTS does, however, create defined requirements, documentation and oversight that certified operations must follow. That accountability is an important part of improving how textiles are made.

Why Fairtrade and GOTS Are Both Important

Fairtrade and GOTS are complementary certifications. They examine different, interconnected parts of the journey from cotton field to finished product.

An organic fibre is important, but the fibre is only one part of the story. How cotton is purchased matters. How it is processed matters. The chemicals used, the wastewater produced and the conditions inside manufacturing facilities matter as well.

Using both Fairtrade and GOTS certification allows us to consider more of that story.

Why Third-Party Certification Matters

Words such as sustainable, ethical and responsible are now used frequently in the textile industry. Without clear standards behind them, however, it can be difficult to know exactly what those words mean.

Third-party certification replaces vague assurances with published requirements and independent verification. It gives brands a framework to follow and gives customers a more reliable way to evaluate product claims.

Certification is not the end of the work. Supply chains are complex, and responsible production requires continued attention, transparency and improvement. Certifications provide a foundation for that work and a way to hold businesses and suppliers accountable to shared standards.
