What Chemicals Are (and Aren’t) Used in Takasa Bedding?

Transparency on our organic and Fairtrade certified sheets

At Takasa, we believe that what touches your skin should be safe, non-toxic, and ethically made. That’s why every one of our bedding and bath products is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the world’s leading certification for organic textiles. GOTS not only verifies the use of organic cotton; it also sets strict limits on what chemicals can and can’t be used throughout the manufacturing process.

We often receive questions from conscious shoppers who want to ensure that what they bring into their homes is truly clean and safe. So, let us break it down.

1. What are your sheets “washed” in during production?

Our sheets are washed using biodegradable, plant-based detergents that are GOTS-approved. These natural detergents are free from chlorine bleach, optical brighteners, phosphates, and other harmful synthetic chemicals. The goal is to gently clean the cotton without leaving behind any residue that could irritate your skin or pollute the water supply.

2. Are chemicals used to make your sheets hypoallergenic?

No added chemicals are used to make our sheets hypoallergenic. Instead, they are naturally hypoallergenic because they are made from 100% organic cotton, grown and processed without harmful substances. That makes them a great choice for anyone with skin sensitivities, allergies, or a preference for toxin-free living.

3. Are chemicals used to make your bedding softer?

We never use synthetic softeners. The softness of Takasa bedding comes from:

  • The long-staple organic cotton fibers we use
  • The weave type (sateen for silky softness, percale for cool crispness, or flannel for cozy warmth)
  • Mechanical processes, like gentle brushing or combing, rather than chemical softening

All processes are GOTS-compliant, which means harsh chemical softeners are not allowed.

4. Do you use formaldehyde in processing?

Absolutely not. Formaldehyde is sometimes used in conventional bedding to make it wrinkle-resistant, but it is also a known irritant and is strictly banned under GOTS. We avoid it completely. If you ever see “wrinkle-free” on a bedding label, it is a sign to dig deeper into what chemicals might have been used.

5. Are pesticides added during processing?

No. The cotton used in Takasa bedding is certified organic from seed to finished product, which means:

  • It is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides
  • No pesticides are added during processing or finishing
  • GOTS prohibits the use of these chemicals at every stage

Organic cotton is better for your health, the environment, and the farmers who grow it.

6. What chemicals are used in the dyeing process?

For our coloured bedding, we use low-impact, non-toxic dyes that are:

  • Free from heavy metals
  • Free from azo dyes (which can release carcinogenic amines)
  • GOTS-approved and environmentally safe

Our dyeing process is also water-conscious. Wastewater is treated properly to ensure it doesn’t harm surrounding ecosystems. For our Natural (undyed) products, we skip the dyeing process entirely.

7. Do you add flame retardants or waterproofing agents?

Never. Takasa bedding is free from:

  • Flame retardants
  • Waterproofing chemicals
  • Stain-resistant coatings
  • Any synthetic finishes

These treatments are common in conventional bedding but are linked to various health concerns. Our products are intentionally simple, safe, and designed for peace of mind.

Why this matters

When you sleep on Takasa sheets, you’re not just choosing comfort, you are choosing a healthier home and a cleaner planet. Everything we make is:

  • Certified by GOTS and Fairtrade International
  • Non-toxic, biodegradable, and kind to sensitive skin
  • Ethically made from seed to final stitch

Because your bedding should help you rest easier—in every sense of the word.
